Forward progress
1:00pm EST - It’s a fresh week for Rust development and we’re seeing forward progress on some exciting new features.
Skin updates and hair!
The skin updates branch - which was briefly added then removed last week - is seeing some promising commits. Along with the new face models, blinking eyes, and improved bodies, it now appears we may see hair also!
‘Male_hairstyle_01’ has been added to the branch; the first of hopefully many new hairdo’s for the game. The branch is still not merged, so we do not have any visuals yet, but stay tuned as Thursday approaches as this branch is expected to go live this week.
Mountable progress
Helk has continued work on other thing which was added then removed last week: chair sitting. Still on the ‘mountables’ branch, we are unable to test this functionality at the moment. What we can see from the commits, however, is players will be able to look around at clamped angles while sitting. Check back here on Thursday to see more on the progress of this new mountable system.
Frozen lake
Damian is rocking out commits on the snow biome revamp branch. As we saw in the devblog last week, he is overhauling biomes and adding natural landmarks across the map. The first of which is a frozen lake that will spawn in the snow biome (suprise, surprise). As with all changes to maps, this functionality will not make it in game till the next forced wipe at the earliest (October 5th).
Optimization
Andre, doing as he does, has introduced more optimizations this week in the form of reducing memory usage by freeing up world serialization cache after loading the map. Jeez, that was a mouthful… long and short: more memory free, better performance.
Other stuff
- Flashlight attachment no longer shows gun shadows all over the place
- Eating raw fish no longer makes the player puke
- More progress on the new arm cleanup
