Semi auto rifle added, Holmzy's law, and uber batching
1/14 @ 4:00pm EST - The update and devblog are out!
1/14 @ 3:00pm EST - Our update stream is live!
1/14 @ 10:50am EST - An update is expected to drop later today. The post below covers the main highlights of this update, so rather than re-write it, I just updated it with any recent additions. This update does not force a wipe and no wipes are scheduled for any Rustafied servers.
Tune in at 3pm EST for our live update stream!
12:48pm EST - It is the second day of Rust development for this update cycle and some big changes are afoot. We’ve got a new gun, more transparency in admin actions, and some much needed client optimizations. I just touched base with the devs and it looks like there will be an update released this week, meaning all this will likely go live on Thursday. Let’s get into it…
Semi auto rifle is in
The much anticipated semi automatic rifle has been added to the staging branch. This lower tier weapon doesn’t require any high quality metal to craft and fires similar to its sibling, the semi auto pistol. With 18 rounds of rifle ammo per clip, this bad boy doesn’t have the range of an AK, but packs more punch than the Thompson and SMG. Here are some details and pictures:
Clip
16 rifle (5.56) rounds
Materials Needed
60 cloth, 450 metal frags
Craft time
3 minutes
Rarity
Blueprint book
Attachments
2 slots
Rate of fire
Semi-auto, 120 rounds per minute
Holmzy’s Law
In an attempt to raise transparency and stem the tide of admin abuse accusations, any item spawned by an admin is now broadcast to the whole server in chat. Not surprisingly, this has been very well received by players while getting mixed reviews from server owners / admins.
Player skin changes
There have been some tweaks to the player skin. It not only looks nicer, but players who got a bit darker a couple weeks ago once again have a lighter complexion.
Uber batching
Andre is working on a new branch called 'Uber batching'. Not to be confused with collider batching, this branch deals with rendering and improving performance on the client side. Given the many complaints about poor performance, this will be a welcomed addition once it goes live.
Edit: This has been merged into main so we'll hopefully see some improved FPS when the update goes live!
Debug shortcuts removed
Admins lives got a little bit harder as Garry removed several shortcuts used for debugging, most notably, “shift-p” for freecam and “shift-l” for noclip. These things must now be toggled through the console (see commands below). I have to admit, after getting so used to using those shortcuts, I’m not a fan of this change.
Console commands
- Noclip: noclip 1
- Freecam: debugcamera 1
Edit: Garry just pointed out to me that you can bind these shortcuts again using:
bind l noclip
bind p debugcamera
writecfg
I take it all back, this change makes sense.
Note to dev (staging) branch players
With the addition of the semi auto rifle, there was a protocol++, meaning you’ll need to have your client opted into the staging branch to play on the dev branch server. You can find instructions on how to switch here.
