12:00am EST - A new paradigm for inventory management is almost live on staging! Backpacks will enter the game with the February 1st update and should be on staging soon for testing.
We’ll be running through all of this on our update preview stream which goes live at 1pm EST. Follow @Rustafied for news throughout the week.
Backpacks coming to staging
After much concept limbo, Backpacks will soon be a reality in Rust! Set to go live with the February 1st update, backpacks will be in testing on staging for most of the month. As you would expect, backpacks give the ability for players to carry more inventory items with them.
At the time of writing this, Backpacks are not yet live on staging. Thanks to the commits, however, we do know some tentative details about these packs. Mainly, there will be two backpacks (a large and a small), both of which will utilize the same inventory slot which parachutes occupy.
Here are the specifics we know about each backpack:
Small backpack
Slots
12
Cost
5 sewing kits
50 cloth
Large backpack
Slots
30
Cost
Unknown
Will not be craftable
As with all new functionality, everything with this is subject to change. We’ll keep you up to date with changes via these articles each week and our update preview streams.
Edit: Backpacks are now live on staging. Here are a couple more details:
Backpacks are not slowing down movement speed at all
The backpack inventory is separate from players inventory
When a player dies, the backpack is looted separately, like a box
Small backpacks are default blueprints and crafted in 30 seconds (no workbench required)
Large backpacks are not craftable and there is no word on where they will be purchased or how much they will cost
Small backpack is blue, large backpack is green. Both are the same model just different colors at this point. This is very likely to change.
Metal Detector
There’s also a slew of commits related to the upcoming metal detectors. Still on a separate branch, it’s not abundantly clear how these detectors will be implemented in the game. Will they be used to find small deposits of metal to dig up? Will they aid in finding hidden stashes? At the moment, it’s all up in the air. As always, we’ll keep you posted as more comes to light.
