Charitable Rust 2023: Over $300,000 raised!
Real quick before update news, the final numbers are in for our yearly charity event, Charitable Rust! I’m proud to announce we raised $303,943.25 for charity: water! A huge thank you to everyone involved who helped raise this incredible amount of money!
Happy 10th Birthday Rust!
Rust turns 10 years old this month! A very happy birthday to Rust and a huge thank you to the whole team at Facepunch who has helped develop and improve this amazing game over the last decade. Expect some party favors (Pinata’s and Confetti Cannons — see below) in the game between Dec. 7th and the 16th. Here’s to another 10 years!
Pinata’s
Pinata’s can be crafted with 500 wood then hung around your base on ceilings, doors, and the like. As you whack them and reduce their health, parts fall off until eventually 2 items drop out once it’s destroyed. These items include things like ammo, fuel, food, and tools.
Confetti Cannon
Next we have the Confetti Cannon which fires off confetti into the air. Crafted for 75 wood and 5 gunpowder, these cannons can be fired multiple times.
Support a Streamer
As part of the festivities, Facepunch is partnering with Twitch to host Support a Streamer during the Christmas period! How this works is Twitch viewers will be rewarded for gifting subscriptions to streamers in the Rust category. From today (Dec. 7th) until Dec. 31st, viewers who gift 2 subscriptions to eligible streamers will be rewarded with the Creator Computer Station to decorate your base!
Twitch Rivals
Kicking off on Monday, December 11th, the 4th of its kind Twitch Rivals event goes live! This event will feature 10 teams competing over 5 days with daily challenges every day. Make sure to link your accounts on the Facepunch Twitch page to get all the drops from your favorite streamers.
Legacy items
To help commemorate 10 years, there are some items from the legacy days making a comeback with the update. These items are not part of a DLC or anything, but some do have certain requirements to acquire. Here are some details:
Legacy Bow
First on the list, the Legacy Bow. With the same stats as the normal hunting bow, this legacy version functions and fires the same way, just with the legacy vibe. It’s not clear how this will be obtained at the moment.
Edit: This has been added as a skin on the item store!
Legacy Furnace
The old stone furnace from legacy will be available to people as a login reward this month to anyone who plays Rust for 3+ hours. It behaves just like a normal furnace but features the retro legacy look.
M4 Shotgun
The M4 Shotgun deals a bit more damage than the Spas, while featuring a slightly slower fire rate and greater range. Like the Spas, it cannot be crafted and looks like it’ll be found in higher end loot crates.
Legacy Shelter
Highlight of the legacy items, the Legacy Shelter makes a return. This ad-hoc shelter costs 600 wood and can be placed down on the fly. Once placed, it features a door with a key lock that opens for you. You can replace this key lock with a code lock if you like.
Although small, the Shelter has enough room for a bag, box, furnace, and even a bench if you plan it properly. I wouldn’t get too comfortable in this Shelter though, as it’s fairly easy to break into with only 500 health overall (with the wood door having its own health stats). 2 molotov’s will break the door, 3 will break the whole shelter. Around 40 exploding ammo will break it also.
As far as decay is concerned, these shelters appear to start decaying within an hour and fully decay over the course of several hours.
Edit: These do also appear to have a small building block radius around them now and you can no longer place code locks on them from the looks of it.
Frontier building skin
Also helping to commemorate the 10th birthday of Rust, a new building DLC goes live today. The Frontier building skin is the first wood tier building skin of its kind. With rustic vibes, this skin is a bit of a throwback to the days of the huge wood bases in legacy. No word on price-point yet, but expect it to show up on the item store near update time.
Edit: It’s live on the item store for $12.99 USD!
Paint improvements
Artists of Rust will rejoice this update as some new features and quality of life changes are coming to paint canvases. Here is a summary:
UI has been updated
Added a button to turn off the light on canvases (to reduce glare)
Added convars for the tools so players can bind different tools to different keystrokes
Added a new brush with a variable texture
Winter Drops Fest
Stay tuned later in the month for some special holiday Twitch drops along with the Rust Xmas event! It looks like this will kick off on the 16th. We’ll have more information posted over the coming weeks as the event nears.
