Easter is coming!
4/19 @ 4:20pm EST - The Client update is out and devblog is live!
4/18 @ 1:50am EST - Easter is around the corner! To celebrate, Rust is launching its first ever in game Easter event this week. This post is only partially complete given the Easter event has yet to be merged in. I will include all the details once they become available.
Expect a mandatory client and server update at some point Friday afternoon to apply this Easter goodness (estimate from devs: 3pm EST / 8pm BST). All Rustafied servers will still wipe this week at their regularly scheduled times.
Our update preview stream will go live at 3pm EST today. Follow @Rustafied for news throughout the day.
* Other updates from the day moved to bottom of the post to avoid clutter
Easter Event goes live Friday
The Easter Bunny is coming to Rust for the first time and he’s bringing a bunch of goodies! The Easter event will go live on Friday around 3pm EST (8pm BST) with a mandatory server and client update (no wipe required). This event will run on all servers until the next update and forced wipe on May 2nd.
Easter Egg Hunt
What would Easter be without an egg hunt? A highlight of the Easter event; egg hunts will happen in Rust about once every in game day. You’ll get a 10 second countdown on your screen accompanied by some lighthearted music.
Once the countdown ends, eggs will spawn all around you, and a scoreboard - of Top Bunnies - will show up on the right of your screen. Run around a grab all the eggs you can. Equipping your Easter Basket to grab them quicker (with left click) and adorning your Bunny Ears and Onesie will allow you to see eggs from a greater distance (egg vision).
The players with most eggs at the end of the hunt wins a prize!
1st Place
3 Silver Eggs
2nd Place
1 Silver Egg
3rd Place
1 Bronze Egg
Egg Basket
You’ll be able to use an Egg Basket to aid you in picking up eggs on your hunt! If you have an Easter Basket equipped, you can left click on the eggs during the egg hunt to pick them up quicker.
Collectible Eggs
Easter is all about the eggs, right? Well Easter in Rust is no different. Several types of eggs have been introduced for the Easter event. Similar to the presents in the Rust Christmas event, most of these eggs can be opened for loot or upgraded to higher tier eggs, which then can be opened for better loot.
Below are the 4 types of Eggs you’ll be able to collect. Painted eggs can stack to 1000 and are only used for upgrading to a Bronze Egg. Bronze and Silver Eggs can be upgraded or opened for loot. Gold Eggs will provide the best loot.
Here are some example drops:

Bunny Ears
You’ll be able to show off your Easter spirit with a pair of Bunny Ears. Found in the Bronze Eggs, these ears provide basic protection from cold, melee, and projectiles. They also give a +1 egg vision (which helps you see eggs from farther away).
Bunny Onesie
What goes better with your Bunny Ears than a Bunny Onesie?! Gotten through opening Silver Eggs, this Onesie provides basic protection from the cold, melee, and projectiles. Like the Bunny Ears, the Onesie also gives you +1 egg vision so you can see eggs from farther away.
Rustigé Eggs
Some high quality decorations are on the way! These intricately designed Eggs can be deployed around your base to show all your friends just how well off you are. They both open up and play a little tune while rotating a small model of either the lighthouse or dome monument with attack helicopter floating around.
My hunch is these will be available for purchase on the Rust item store (not confirmed).
Easter Door Wreath
Finally, there will be a wreath which can be placed on your door to let all your neighbors know just how much you fucking love Easter. This will likely be available for purchase on the item store.
Map improvements
Along with all this Easter stuff, some upgrades to the in game map Garry made last week are making their way in. Along with it looking a bit different and running smoother, you can now zoom out further and even see the Oil Rigs off shore!
Edit: This unfortunately didn’t make it into the release branch today. Sorry for the false hope - expect to see these map updates on May 2nd.
Skinnable Double Doors!
One of the most requested items to be skinned is about to get just that! The Double Doors are being modified to allow for custom skins from the community. This work is still on a separate branch and there have been no skins officially released for it yet, but chances are we’ll be seeing our first Double Door skins in the next couple of weeks.
Horseback riding
Late last week, Helk tweeted that he’d add horseback riding as soon as he could if the Leaf’s won the game. They won, so Helk told everyone to saddle up! Fuck yeah! I can’t wait to ride horses in Rust! More on this as it progresses.
Texture streaming
Diogo is working on some optimizations in the form of texture streaming. Long and short, texture streaming in Unity saves memory by only loading the textures needed given the current camera view as opposed to loading them all. This will hopefully improve loading times and performance, especially on lower end machines.
More lighting improvements
Petur is on a lighting frenzy over here! After reworking the lighting for the Compound Monument last month, he transitioned to tweaking the lighting effects in the Bandit Camp over the past two weeks. This week, he’s moved on to address the lighting in caves and sewers.
The Bandit Camp and cave / sewer stuff is still on a separate branch as of this moment, so no visuals quite yet. That said, it appears likely that we’ll see all this going live with the update hitting May 2nd. Stay tuned for visuals as the month progresses.
Unity update and server browser improvements
Work continues on moving Rust to the latest version of Unity. As you may recall from last week, the team is updating the underlying engine of the game to the latest version. This work includes many bug fixes and tweaks to address various issues which arise due to the changes in this new release.
This week we’ve also seen some commits from Andre addressing some performance issues on the server browser. Although we can’t quite experience these for ourselves yet, hopes are the server browser will have improved behavior come the next update.
Other stuff
Giant Excavator monument progress
Bone Knife and Combat Knife animation update - quicker wind up when throwing
Other updates through the day
4/19 @ 3:50pm EST - The server update just hit for the Easter event. Client update should come shortly.
4/19 @ 11:30am EST - The staging branch has been fixed and I was able to fill in some more information below. The update is still expected to hit around 3pm EST / 8pm BST today.
4/19 @ 3:45am EST - The Easter event is planned to go live today! At the moment, however, there is an RPC error in play when trying to join a server on the staging branch. The devs are aware and working on a fix. Unfortunately, this limits our ability to test the Easter event thoroughly. That said, I’ve posted what we know about the Easter event below - I’ll post more details as soon as I can.
4/18 @ 3:00pm EST - Our update preview stream is live! twitch.tv/rustafied
4/18 @ 12:15pm EST - Looks like a lot of stuff with the Easter event is still in development. Helk told me a bunch of fixes will be out in several hours. I’ll gather all the details and post them here after that. In the mean time, I did list some of the preliminary stuff and posted some pictures below.
4/18 @ 11:00am EST - The Easter event is official on the staging branch! Gathering all the information on the event now, it’ll be added below soon.
