This update: The inverse size of a Newmans penis
6:05pm EST - Some more performance commits just now from Garry. Looks like we may see another hotfix tonight...
4:48pm EST - Performance is a bit better but still dropping on our main server. Garry is looking into it...
4:30pm EST - The server update to fix performance is live and we've updated our 3 servers. Also, upped or main server to 225 slots to really stress test this bitch. So far, so good...
3:58pm EST - Just heard from Garry, performance hotfix is on the way.
3:08pm EST - I might have spoke too soon, FPS on our main server is much lower than normal. The devs are aware of the issue and looking into it.
2:26pm EST - Almost 3 hours since the update and things are running well. Animal AI was impacting server FPS so I disabled animal movement and thinking on our main server to maximize performance. New server maps have been updated here.
12:30pm EST - Added more info about grenades and the 3 new types of barricades below.
11:45am EST - The update and devblog just hit (several hours earlier than normal). F1 grenade is officially in and we're gathering some updated cost numbers now!
1:58am EST - Holy fuck do we have a big update today! Two solid weeks of functionality and a sexy new terrain has a lot of people excited. Map wipes will be forced across the board, however, blueprints will carry over (unless your server owner intentionally clears them). We’re still some hours away from the update, but as always, I’ll keep you posted here and on twitter throughout the day. Here's a look at what’s new with this update...
Grenades!
Helk has just added F1 grenades. Here's some details:
- Not a default blueprint, need to find in a rad town or a barrel
- Cost: 150 Gun powder, 50 metal frags
- Initial tests show it's not a valid raiding tool, only doing 20-30 damage to most building types.
Improved terrain
Probably the most noticeable of all changes in this update are the terrain improvements. Andre and team have been slaving away for around 5 weeks on these and boy, has it paid off. As previewed in last weeks devblog, this new procedural map generation includes new models, improved roads / bridges, more water, a new mountain; all adding to a more stunning and interesting landscape.
3 types of barricades
Base defense has some new allies: the wood barricade, the barbed wooden barricade, and the metal barricade. Here's some details on each:
Wooden
Cost
350 Wood
Default blueprint
Barbed
Cost
350 Wood
200 Metal
Not default
Metal
Cost
500 Metal
Not default
Other notes on barricades:
- Running into one damages you 20-30hp and snares you for a second, slowing down movement.
- They all have 100hp.
- A bit concerning is melee attacks appear to do no damage to them at the moment. C4 is the only way to remove them at this time.
Acoustic guitar
No, this is not a late April fools joke; Rust really does now have acoustic guitars. Able to only be spawned by admins at the moment, don’t expect to be strumming away immediately. If you do manage to get your hands on one, primary fire strums, secondary plucks and looking up or down changes the pitch.
Camera
Adding to the list of random item additions, the camera is another spawn-only “tool” for Rust journalists and starving artists alike. Basically a glorified tilt-shift filter, this little fucker can take snazzy looking screens with primary fire, zoom by holding secondary and looking up, and lock focus by holding third fire.
Dropped item models
Say goodbye to your sacks, dropped items may now have their own, unique models. Don’t expect to shit a full sized repair bench quite yet, this is currently only implemented for a couple models.
Increased costs
The value of resources such as stones and metal fragments has grown due to the increased costs of building upgrades, weapons and armor. Still gathering some numbers on this but here's the updated building upgrade costs:
- Wood: 200 wood
- Stone: 300 Stone
- Sheet Metal: 100 Metal
- Armored: 500 Metal, 400 stone 300 wood
Ammo counter
You no longer have to be Sterling Archer at remembering how many bullets are left in your clip, a fine little addition to the UI now does that for you...
Exploit fixes
The team has spent a considerable amount of time blocking the ability to achieve certain long-standing exploits. Specifically, you can no longer place sleeping bags in rocks and you can no longer peek through a floor by un-crouching while on a furnace.
New repair bench digs
The repair bench is no longer a large wood storage with green text on top, it now has a snazzy new model:
Weapon zoom
Looking down the sights of weapons has shifted noticeably. For most weapons, the zoom is less. The bolt, however, has had its zoom increased:
Mushrooms
A small and possibly psychedelic addition, perhaps complimenting the guitar, mushrooms now sprawl across the landscape. Hit them and they spew out blood, further intensifying your trip.
Crystals
A new resource node has been added. Appearing in the snow biome, disappearing after one hit and dispensing random resources, crystals are another addition sprucing up the landscape.
Wounding changes
There have been a two changes to how being wounded works:
- You now stop bleeding when wounded
- Bear traps are more likely to wound rather than kill
F2 menu additions
The graphic menu (F2) has changed a bit. Along with PVT again being disabled by default (started slowing this new terrain down) two new sliders have been added...
Grass slider
Yes, you can turn off grass. Yes, this makes it easier to see traps. Calm your tits, it’s only temporary.
Shader slider
Don’t turn too low unless you’re at the right stage of your mushroom trip.
Perf
The command to show client frames per second, "fps.graph", has been replaced by, "perf." You may recall, the actual graph that went along with fps.graph was removed last week due to it ironically lowering clients FPS. The new perf command has two settings, "perf 1" shows some basics about performance and, "perf 2" will show more details.
Admin teleport
Two new admin commands have also been added: "teleport" and "teleportany". The first command allows admins to teleport directly to another player given their name or steamid. The second command allows admins to teleport to an entity of their choice. Example: “teleportany bear” puts you ass deep into a random, nearby bear poised perfectly to maul you.
Easier Dropping
You can now drag items away from inventory slots to drop said item.
Other things
- Alex has done a great job adding a shitload of new sounds. Just go, listen.
- Minh has done a ton of tweaks and additions to animations across the board.
- Bandages are now held items meaning they have a view model and use animation.
- New rad towns! Hanger and metal monuments are now rad towns with loot.
