Weekend status report
2/22 @ 2:20pm EST - A client / server update came out earlier today which appears to have resolved the memory leak issues (on the server side at least).
1:30pm EST - On Thursday, an update was released which introduced a different system to handle networking for the entire game (RakNet). As expected, it has fixed some issues (player movement appears to be a ton better) and created several new ones...
Server hitches / crashes
Server performance is pretty damn wonky at the moment. Things run smooth for a bit, then there are these server-wide pauses which coincide with this console message:
TimeWarning: Net.sv.Cycle took 4.72 seconds (4719ms)
During these couple of seconds, all actions on the server (building, picking up, opening doors, etc.) lag out. The rest of the time, things run pretty smooth. That is, until the entire server process hangs indefinitely (which appears to be caused by a memory leak in the dedicated server code). In addition to the hangs, server owners are seeing flat out crashes with errors of, “too many heap sections” popping up.
Garry is actively working on fixing this shit, and ideally, these issues will be worked out in the next couple days. In the mean time, pardon any downtime, I’ll restart our servers asap after a crash.
Client crashes
Along with server crashes, there are many reports of clients crashing out, often requiring the process to be terminated manually. Garry offered me this tip yesterday: Set effects.ambient 0 (in console) before joining a server. Not sure if this works, but worth a shot!
Invisible building parts
This familiar fucker is still in play. Certain building parts are invisible for certain players, allowing them to walk through walls / foundations in many cases. Some fixes were released yesterday to address this, and although it appears to be occurring less, we are still getting reports of it happening. As always, I recommend homeowners place their cupboards on the second story or higher and remove off stair / block access past the first floor when you're not online.
Bows breaking
Although not networking related, this is a pain in the ass: Bows are still breaking when you run out of arrows in your inventory. This is not related to durability, they just lose their ability to fire. Therefore, I suggest you always keep at least 1 arrow in your inventory for the time being.
Edit: Reports that this only happens when you try to fire with no arrows. So yeah, don't do that.
