Update delayed, raknet, 3rd person removed and bridges
2/17 @ 5am - The update is out. Our servers are up to date, check out the new map here.
1:25pm EST - It’s a new week in Rust development and the highly anticipated update has been delayed. Still working out some bugs and glitches, the team is now shooting to release the update by tomorrow at the earliest.
Raknet
Garry has been doing work on the Raknet branch the past few days. If you remember from last week, Raknet is a new networking system which will replace the current one (Lidgren). The hope is this new system will fix a lot of the desync issues (invisible players, doors showing as open when they’re really closed, etc). Although Garry has made some good progress, don’t expect to see Raknet in the next update.
3rd person admin only
There have been many complaints about 3rd person person view being exploited to see through walls when raiding. Thankfully, Garry has listened to the community and disabled 3rd person view for normal players (only admins and developers can use it now).
Metal floor protection
The metal floor is one of the only metal building blocks in the game currently. You’d think given it’s high health, it would provide the most protection. That hasn’t been the case up until now, however, because it would incur much more damage from hits than other building blocks do. This bug has been remedied now, meaning it should be much harder to break through.
No building on roads
Fans of tollbooths are going to be disappointed to find out Andre has disabled building ability on the new roads.
Sleeping bag list scrollable
If you’ve tried to add more than 8 sleeping bags, you’ll have noticed that you lose access to certain bags as the list gets longer. This will no longer be the case now that Garry has added the ability to scroll through the sleeping bag list.
Black water fix
If you’ve been playing on dev you might have noticed the water is all black. This is a glitch which is happening when your graphics quality is set to 0 (fastest). You can make the water appear normal again by turning your graphics quality (in F2) up all the way and back down again.
Bridges
Daniel has been testing a new bridge concept for the game, here’s an ingame shot posted earlier today.
New loot crate ideas
He’s also posted up some new ideas for loot crates:
Old container
Vincent has moved the old container remnants to the ‘Done this week’ pile. That means we should start seeing this bad boy in game shortly.
Building variation ideas
Megan has posted an idea for sprucing up the look of buildings.
Tip of the day: Enable PVT to up FPS
PVT (procedural virtual texturing) used to be a big FPS hog. For whatever reason that has all changed. In fact, many people report significant FPS improvements by enabling it now. Try it for yourself by hitting F2 and toggling the PVT box.
