Auto Turrets: The future of base defense
10/12 @ 4:47pm EST - I'm on vacation till Thursday. See you then for the update!
2:40pm EST - The devblog is out. Expect a forced server / client update in a bit.
11:36am EST - The team is cranking on fixes and we’re even seeing some movement on workshop skins! No huge weekly update is on the agenda, however, a small patch release wouldn’t surprise me. The devblog should be out in a bit, in the mean time, let’s talk about turrets...

A look at Auto Turrets
As many of us have seen, Helk has been working on a branch titled, “Auto Turret”. I had a chance to catch up with him on the subject, and he provided some insight into how these bad boys will change base design, forever.
Keep in mind, this is the epitome of work in progress. As such, all this is subject to change, and don’t get your panties in a bunch about any given thing.
Overview
Remember the sentry guns from HL2 and TF2? Well, this is like that. And before you go all, “OMG, autonomous weapons in Rust?! This game is fucking ruined!!” on me, I’d like you to remember the last time you went to sleep in your warm, comfy base -- only to wake up on the beach.
The Auto Turret is here to help. Keeping an eye out while you sleep, this weapon will fire upon unauthorized visitors automatically.
Ammo
It will most likely fire 9mm rounds to start and have a 50 round clip with a 3 to 4 second reload. You’ll be able to drop hundreds of rounds in its storage before you log off, ensuring it has plenty of ammo to take care of those pesky offline raiders.
Ability
As with all weapons, balance is key. The first iteration of the auto turret will have a short range (20-30m) and a 180 degree firing radius. You won’t be able to place it down in a field and have it clear the landscape.
Intended use
The main use is base defense. Placed in key ingress points, this puppy will provide protection against raiders, even when you're offline.
Authorization
Similar to tool cupboards, users will have to authorize on the turret to ensure they don’t get mowed down. Watch out, anyone will be able to authorize / clear the list (if they say, sneak up behind it).
Crafting / rarity
This will be a pretty rare item, only able to crafted from new parts which will be found at helicopter crash sites or from other server events.
When will it be in game?
Helk is actively working on the Auto Turret and expects the first version to be in game by the update next Thursday.
Future
As we can see in some of the concept art, the team intends to allow different weapons to be placed on a turret in the future. Note: the first iteration will not feature this.
