Weapon refactor, admin community, and translations
1:10pm EST - One day away from everyone's favorite day of the week. The team is working hard, lots of great commits today. Will we see a big update tomorrow? I really hope so, however, only time will tell. We continue to have cool stuff happening at Rustafied, but before I get into that, lets look at the teams progress today...
Weapon refactor
Garry and Maurino have teamed up on the weapon refactor. Looking at the held items trello card, you'll notice a lot of progress has been made since yesterday. Many of the commits are still pretty code dense, however, we can see most of the items have been transferred to this new system. It looks like the main things left are the gather and damage proficiencies along with some sounds.
Interesting point on this punch list: "Wear/Tear/Damage Self (if used wrong) (condition)." Currently, tools and weapons have no durability. Could this mean the re-introduction of the legacy functionality we were all so ‘meh’ about? Or is this a new play on durability which only negatively impacts if used wrong. I’m not sure but I will definitely keep an eye on this one.
Animal AI
Zon is still working at upping animal IQ. Most of his commits today are also pretty code dense, “Added missing SERVER blocks” and “Subtracted the animal survival rollback.” To me, it looks like the core functionality is in and he’s just tying up some loose ends prior to merging into main. It’s still unclear if this will be in the next update.
Lighthouse
Yesterday I posted some in game shots of the lighthouse from reddit. At the time, I hadn’t confirmed if it was from the main branch or dev. Last night, I spawned up a test server on the development branch and immediately saw this new monument. Awesome, that means we can expect to see it live in the next launch. Keep these monuments coming, the more landmarks the better!
Level wonkiness
Is it just me or has the biome placement been a little fucked up since Tuesdays update? Seems like, depending on the seed, snow can be next to the beach - grass doesn’t always cut it right down the middle anymore. Also, the general shape of the overall maps appears to have gotten much less circular. I’m not complaining, I like switching the terrain up. Just wanted to check in and make sure I’m not making shit up. Anyway, Andre has been making a lot of changes to the terrain generation so we’ll continue seeing the procedural maps and biomes shift.
Admin commands
I added some admin commands to the bottom of the useful rust console commands guide. There are definitely more to add, this is just the first iteration. Please comment below if you have any suggested additions.
Also, I am phasing out the comments sections on the guides. It is not that I don’t want to hear your comments, more that the disqus widget was having trouble interacting with the site. Because the site uses javascript to change pages, we were getting different disqus threads showing up depending on how you navigated there. For ease of use, I’m requesting everyone comment on the most recent update post. I’ll be exploring more workable options going forward.
Server owner community
Yesterday, I started an invite only community for server owners and admins. This will serve as a central location where server leaders can privately discuss issues and updates to their Rust servers. If you would like an invite, please send your server / website information to rustafied@gmail.com.
Spanish translation
Over the weekend, Ignacio (aka Nacho Tikal) offered to start translating our guides into Spanish. He’s off to a great start with the translation of our frequently asked question guide. Here is a link to the public google doc. If anyone wants to join the translation team (for Spanish or any other language) please email me at rustafied@gmail.com.
Tip of the day: Salvaged hammer for melee
The salvaged hammer is currently devastating in melee combat. It only costs 100 wood making it the cheapest option. It can take down a naked in a hit or two, the only thing is it doesn't have the range of a spear. Granted, all this will probably change when the weapon refactor launches, but for the time being, it's a great bet.
