Friday post-mortem
10:27pm EST - Wood gather amounts have doubled, see more in our tools guide. Also, I updated a bunch of numbers for how long it takes to break walls after the lastest update. See more in our building upgrade guide.
So the big update dropped yesterday and the Friday devblog followed shortly after. The devblog did a great job at summarizing the work for the week (as it always does) but lets take a look at things you may notice as you're playing the game this weekend...
Crashes like woah
Many players are reporting game crashes when interacting with others, killing sleepers, waking up among other things. Earlier in the week, Garry pushed a change which removes SteamNative and changed it to steamworks.net. He warned us this could hurt for a day or two. Well, the update launched yesterday and this weekend appears to be that day or two. I'm sure we'll see stability improve as we get into next week. In the mean time, try not to punch your computer when you freeze out, rejoin and are dead.
Climb, Newman, climb!
Yes, this is an interesting one. You can now climb up any height wall quickly by running at it and spamming space bar. It's actually kinda fun to do but will really annoy the shit out of some home owners. Until is is fixed, put some damn roofs (floors) on the top of your base! Here's the bug report.
All hail level 6
We saw some big changes to the building upgrade system with this update. Along with new textures, each tool now has it’s own demolish proficiency stats for each level. On top of that, we now have a new level: Level 6.
What people may not notice right away is what a drastic change this has to the strength of each wall. A level 6 wall with a hatchet (the most proficient tool on that level) took 2 hours and 15 minutes! Prior to this update, a level 5 wall (then the top tier wall) took around 7 minutes to break down. Builders rejoice and raiders lament. I'm still testing and will post updates on our Rust building upgrade guide.
Suddenly sleepy
There have also been reports of your character immediately showing up somewhere else on the map asleep. You don't see a death screen or respawn button, just straight to 'click here to wake up'. Bug report on this one here.
Death on disconnect
Many people are experiencing their players dying when they disconnect and reconnect to a server. It appears something is not firing properly when a player disconnects. My hunch is it is related to this fix Garry did this week. Thankfully, sleeping bags still work. Not sure there is a proper bug report in for this, I'll look closer and file one if there isn't.
Edit: didn't see a bug report so just put one in.
Can't wake up
This is another one many people are getting stuck on. You hit the wake up screen and see your sleeping Newman, but the wake up button doesn't work no matter how many times you hit it. You may also notice your console yelling at you: Not Sleeping! -- Motherfucker, I am sleeping!
Here’s the fix which sometimes works:
- Go into spectate (f1 -> spectate)
- Respawn (f1 -> respawn)
There is a popular bug report for this one so I'm sure it'll be fixed soon.
Keys don't work on server restart
It appears keys stop working when a server restarts. This is leaving players locked in out of their (now a lot harder to break into) houses. Hopefully we'll see a fix soon because with the amount of updates and status of the code, servers need to restart often. There is a bug report here for more info.
Pick Axes don't harvest
Something in yesterdays update has caused the pick axe to be a lot slower (closer to legacy speeds) and not be able to harvest from wood or stone. It will still kill the fuck out of someone (and still deals the most damage of any tool) but don't expect it to gather you shit.
