1:00pm EST - Our update stream is live! twitch.tv/rustafied

12:00am EST - Happy July 4th! It’s update day and the team at Facepunch has a bunch of new goodies in store for us this month.

The update and forced wipe is expected at normal time, 2pm EST (7pm BST). Our update stream goes live at 1pm EST. Follow @Rustafied for news throughout the day.

Bikes

A new vehicle type enters the game with the update today. Bikes come in several variants and allow for traversing the Rust landscape in a new way!

Overview
In total, there are 4 new types of bikes being added (pedal bike, trike, motorbike and motorbike with sidecar). You can find them spawning around various monuments and points around the map.

Pedal bikes
First up, the Pedal bike (or Push bike). This 1-seater vehicle can be found along roads and operates as you would expect: use WASD to pedal and steer. No fuel required as it's powered by a good ole fashioned leg workout (does consume food / water levels). Use the ‘mouse 1’ button to ring its little bell to let others know of your presence.

Trikes
Similar to the pedal bike, Trikes are powered by your own two feet. They also feature an extra seat, so you can travel down the road with a friend (or now prisoner even) in tow.

Motorbikes
Next we have the Motorbikes. As you would imagine, they run on low grade fuel. They are faster than their pedal-powered cousins and even feature a headlight for night time travel (toggled with the F key). Found at monuments, there is a single person motorbike and a variant with a sidecar (allowing for two people). Be mindful when traveling though, as these do take damage from guns, and can be destroyed in roughly two mags from an AK.

Other stuff

  • Hold left shift to sprint pedal bikes (or ‘boost’ with motorbikes)

  • You can repair them with a hammer and metal fragments

  • You can store bikes inside and, like other vehicles, they decay slower than when outside

Prisoner Hoods and Handcuffs

Taking prisoners becomes much more viable with this update given the addition of two new items: Prisoner hood and Handcuffs. Here are some specifics:

Handcuffs

  • Can be placed on a downed / wounded player or one who uses a friendly gesture

  • Once you stand up a cuffed player, you have additional commands to push and mount a vehicle (via radial menu)

  • Limits players ability to mount in vehicles (but your captor can force mount you)

  • Disables ability to respawn and kill from console

  • Teammates cannot see cuffed / hooded members and there are no death markers either

  • If cuffed, you can hold the left mouse button to start to try to break free. If you hold it for 60 seconds, the cuffs will break. If you’re pushed while trying to break free, it’ll stop the progress bar (but doesn’t reset progress bar)

  • Locks inventory for cuffed player (captor can see inventory and grab items from hotbar only)

Prisoner Hood

Traveling Vendor

A new option for purchasing goods will be roaming the roads of Rust post-update. The Traveling Vendor is a rusty looking ice cream truck offering a random assortment of goods sold for scrap. You’ll find this truck driving around the roads on the map (and can see a special icon on the in-game map). Unlike some other vendors, you cannot use the in-game map to see what is for sale, so you’ll have to make the trip.

To purchase something, simply stop in front of the truck on the road and head over to the attached vending machines. Be careful not to fire at the truck as it features turrets which will not hesitate to open fire at aggressors. Note the pricing of these items are dynamic, so the more popular an item is, the higher the cost. Likewise, less popular items will be sold at a discount. Also, you cannot destroy or raid this thing, so don’t bother trying.

Correction: The traveling vendor does not have dynamic pricing, it was removed prior to the update.

Dynamic pricing on vending machines

The traveling vendor isn’t the only NPC adopting this dynamic pricing model. Various other vendors around the map will have their prices adjusted according to demand. This stands to shift some various metas when it comes to the in game economy.

From the devblog:

The way it works is we now keep a running total of the average number of items sold every 6 in-game hours. Every 6 hours if the number sold is less than the average then the price of the item will drop by 5% for the next 6 hours (down to a minimum of 50%). If the number of items sold has increased above the average then its price will be increased by 10% (to a maximum of 100% extra, or twice the price). We will be starting prices at 200% so they will likely drop for a while before settling to the “market” price.

Other stuff

  • Can now place barricades on rocks and dirt roads

  • Various memory optimizations

  • Improvements to water visibility

  • Creative mode added for server admins to be able to build without resources and accomplish various other things

  • Fixed occlusion culling setting always turning itself back on when opening the game

  • Do not try to swap items around if they can't stack

  • Improvements to demo UI

  • Various fixes to wire slacking

  • Fixed pulsed door controllers ending up in the wrong state in some cases

  • When the player right clicks a shipping container block while holding a spray can, select the last used spray color in the pie menu by default instead of the color of the shipping container block that the player right clicked on

  • Added another 0.25m to the seismic sensor range forgiveness

  • More work on some server side analytics

  • Fixed tutorial missions missing an icon on the map screen
