What is Primitive?
Big news today as the new Primitive game mode goes live! This unique mode is launching on specific servers (we’ll be running an EU and US Primitive under the community list, more below), offering a completely different Rust experience.
Here's what's changing in Primitive mode:
Progression and Availability: The game mode significantly alters the usual progression system. You won't find any high-tier guns or explosives here. It’s all about getting back to the basics.
Limited Weaponry: The arsenal is stripped down to very basic weapons. It's a return to more traditional combat without the high-tech firepower.
New Siege Arsenal: Get ready to storm castles and fortresses with an entirely new lineup of siege weapons. This includes catapults, ballistas, siege towers, and battering rams, each adding a fresh strategic layer to raids and defenses.
Shields and Crossbows: In addition to siege weapons, new defensive gear like shields and the innovative 4-shot mini crossbow are introduced, spicing up combat dynamics.
This mode is perfect for players looking for a challenge and a change from the high-speed action of standard servers. So, gear up, strategize, and dive into the raw, medieval-like world of Rust's Primitive mode.
Note: The primitive items do also appear to be live in the normal game mode so you can use them there too!
Primitive Progression
As you dive into the new Primitive mode, here’s a quick rundown on what to expect with the progression changes:
Workbench Levels: The game mode has been simplified to only include Level 1 and Level 2 workbenches. The Level 3 workbench is completely off-limits, pushing players to make do with more basic resources.
Level 1 Restrictions: At Level 1, your options are particularly sparse. You'll find it focused heavily on melee weapons — no guns allowed here. This is all about getting up close and personal.
Level 2 Arsenal: Moving up to Level 2, you gain access to an array of siege weapons. This includes everything from catapults to battering rams, adding a new dimension to your tactical approaches. However, just like Level 1, there are no high-tier guns or explosives available.
Siege Tower
Get ready to elevate your raiding strategies with the new Siege Tower, a game-changing addition to the Primitive mode arsenal. This rolling fortress is not just a tool but a tactical advantage, allowing you to approach and infiltrate enemy bases with both cover and style.
Features of the Siege Tower:
Mobility and Cover: The Siege Tower can be moved across the battlefield, providing vital cover as you close in on enemy positions.
Customizable Security: You can secure your Siege Tower by installing your own door, ensuring that only your team has access during the heat of battle.
Horse-Powered: In true medieval fashion, this massive structure can be towed by horses, adding an authentic and strategic element to your sieges.
Whether you’re looking to breach high walls or create a mobile stronghold, the Siege Tower offers a robust and exciting way to enhance your offensive capabilities in Rust’s Primitive mode.

Catapult Ammo Types:
Firebomb: Ignite the battlefield with this incendiary projectile, a netted cluster of fuel-filled jugs that spreads flames upon impact.
Propane Explosive Bomb: Deal massive structural damage with this keg filled with propane, perfect for demolishing fortifications. You can also place this by walls with no catapult required, just whack it with your torch to ignite it.
Scattershot: Cause chaos with a cluster of heavy rocks, delivering broad kinetic damage to anyone unlucky enough to be in its path.

Mounted Ballista: Built for mobility, this version is mounted on wheels and can be towed by horses. It's perfect for offensive strategies that require movement and flexibility in positioning (can’t be placed on roofs and foundations)

Here's an interesting twist in the Primitive mode: Auto turrets are still on the tech tree! But before you scratch your heads wondering why—since traditional guns are out of the picture in this mode—there's a cool adaptation you can make.
You can't load these turrets with regular firearms, but you can equip them with bows, transforming them into Bow Turrets. This unique setup allows you to automate your defenses using classic Rust weaponry, giving a whole new purpose to the trusty bow in your high-tech defenses.
So, gear up your auto turrets with some arrows and let them do the defending for you in a way that sticks to the primitive theme!
Mini crossbow
Get ready to check out the latest addition to your arsenal: the Mini Crossbow. This compact yet deadly weapon offers a very accurate ranged attack option, complete with a unique rotating barrel that allows for rapid reloading of multiple bolts.
Whether you're up for stealthy sniping or quick skirmishes, this mini crossbow has got you covered. Its precision and quick-fire capability make it a game-changer in both stealth and combat scenarios. So, arm yourself with this new tool and take your shooting skills to the next level in Rust!

Key Features of the Shields:
Versatility: Equipped in the backpack slot and easily deployed, these shields can absorb incoming damage, significantly increasing your survivability.
Mobility: While using a shield, your ability to sprint and attack is restricted, adding a tactical layer to your movement and combat decisions.
Compatibility: Shields are automatically equipped when holding compatible weapons, like pistols and some melee tools, allowing for fluid transition between offense and defense.
Whether you're holding the front line or venturing into unknown territories, these shields are essential for any player looking to enhance their defensive tactics. Stay safe out there and let your shield take the brunt of the battle!
