World update preview!

1:00pm EST - Our update preview stream is live! We're on AUX2 showing off the world update!

12:00am EST - Live now on AUX2 for testing, the world update body of work features the biggest change to procedural map generation we’ve seen in years along with several new points of interest. This article summarizes some of the new features you can expect. Remember: all of this is still a work in progress and is subject to change!

We’ll be showing this all off on our update preview stream that goes live at 1pm EST. Follow @Rustafied for news throughout the week.

Rivers

Get set for a wild ride on Rust’s new rivers, making a splash in the October update. Around the map, you'll find three rivers that kick off as quaint streams up in the higher regions and gradually beef up into wider rivers as they snake their way down to the coast. Perfect for adrenaline junkies, these rivers pack a current that’ll send you zooming on kayaks and boogie boards.

But keep your eyes peeled where these waterways meet civilization: rivers roll under roads and railway tracks, but here’s the catch—you can’t kayak under those. You’ll need to hop off and drag your gear around these crossings. Whether you’re in it for the fast-paced water sports or just cruising for a scenic float, these rivers are shaping up to be the new hotspots on the map.

Oasis

Prepare to quench your thirst in style with an new refreshing twist to the desert biome: Oases! These aren't just your average puddles of water; we're talking about lush spots teeming with trees and greenery, perfect for a pit stop. Each procedural map appears to boast three of these verdant havens, coming in three distinct flavors: variants A, B, and C. Whether you're looking to hydrate, hide, or hunt, these new oases are bound to be hotspots for players braving the arid expanse.

Edit: The Oasis count per map has been dropped from 3 to 2.

Canyons

And then there’s the new canyons—Canyon A, B, and C—tucked away in the forest and desert biomes, ready for those of you itching to build something epic. These aren’t just any old ditches; we’re talking deep, dramatic canyons decked out with trees and nodes aplenty. Fancy a build with a view? This is your spot. The entrances are chill, easy to get into, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can scale up most sides to catch those breathtaking cliffside vistas. Plus, they’re sporting some of the snazzy new cliff faces that just got added. Whether you're setting up a secluded base or just looking for a scenic spot to hang out, these canyons offer a solid mix of beauty and utility.

Lakes

Check out the latest scoop on water bodies—Rust is bringing in two cool new lakes, Lake A and Lake B, both nestled in the forest biome. These aren't just your average ponds; they're a primo source of freshwater and teeming with fish, perfect for those who want to settle down and live off the land for a bit. And for the cherry on top? Every now and then, you might find a rowboat spawned along the shores. Imagine the chill vibes of paddling around, fishing rod in one hand, not a care in the world. Whether you're in it for the survival aspect or just want a serene spot to kick back, these lakes are about to become your new favorite chill zones on the map.

Cliffs and rocks

The landscape's getting a major facelift with some slick new cliff faces scattered around the map. These cliffs aren't just for show; they come with plenty of spots where you can jump up or scale your way to the top for some killer views. And it’s not just the highlands getting all the love—keep an eye out near the shorelines for some fresh rock structures adding a bit of rugged charm to your coastal adventures. Whether you're a climber, a base builder looking for a dramatic backdrop, or just in it for the scenic route, these cliffs and rocks bring a whole new level of cool to the game’s geography. In addition, it looks like some old greats might return with a commit referencing recreating the god and anvil rocks!

Toxic Village

There’s a new monument on the block—welcome to the Toxic Village. Picture this: a grungy little setup slicing right through the road, complete with a stone wall perimeter that screams ‘keep out’ (but obviously, we’re going in). It’s decked out with the usual Tier 2 loot treats like boxes, diesel, and a handy recycler—and no pesky puzzles to sweat over— but watch out for the rads!

But here’s the kicker: the Toxic Village appears as though it will be home to a bizarre new find—Radioactive Water. Yeah, you heard that right. Tucked away among the ramshackle buildings, this green goop will soon likely be up for grabs for those daring enough to dip their toes into something a bit more... hazardous.

Diving sites and buoys

Dive into the deep end with Rust’s latest underwater additions! We’re talking some brand-spanking-new Diving Sites, each marked by shiny new buoys bobbing on the surface, giving you the heads-up on some stellar submerged treasures below. These spots are teeming with life and not just the fishy kind. Expect to see crabs scuttling, skeletons giving off some eerie vibes, and starfish adding a splash of color to the ocean floor.

The catch? None of these dive sites are marked on your map. That’s right, you’ve got to keep your peepers peeled as you cruise the waves, ready to spot those buoys and dive into adventure. It’s all about discovery and taking the plunge into the unknown, so grab your diving gear and get ready to explore Rust’s watery wonders like never before.

Legacy wood piles

Remember the good old days of chopping wood in Rust legacy? Well, they're back with a twist with the new legacy wood piles! These bad boys are like hitting the lumberjack lottery—just a few swings with your hatchet, and you're hauling away 1000 wood. No need to aim for that perfect spot; these piles are all about getting you stocked up quick and easy.

Whether you’re building your fortress or just need a quick firewood fix, these legacy wood piles are your new go-to. They’re popping up all over, so keep your eyes peeled and your hatchet ready.

Water wells

Also getting a major update with these changes: Water wells! These mini-monuments are stepping up their game big time. No longer just a quaint spot to fill your jug, these wells have turned into bustling little hubs thanks to a friendly NPC shopkeeper who’s stocked with all sorts of goodies along with a fresh food cache. We’re talking farming equipment, a variety of teas, and even some basic weapons for you to grab.

But that’s not all—around these wells, you’ll also find planter boxes ripe for the harvesting and special new food crates that occasionally drop some of those sought-after teas. It’s like a mini oasis of resources if you can find it (not marked on the map atm).

Frontier Hazmat skin

Looks like there’s some fresh DLC gear on the horizon, potentially dropping in October. Gear up for the new Frontier Hazmat Suit pack—it’s all about giving your survival gear a wild, frontier twist. This isn’t just any old DLC; we’re talking about some seriously cool skins that’ll make you stand out in the wasteland.

Included in the pack, you’ll find a rugged hatchet skin, perfect for chopping down trees or foes with style. Then there’s the "Blunder Buster," a fierce new skin for the double barrel that turns it into a real showstopper. And rumors are swirling about a possible high wall skin that'll make your base look like a fortress straight out of a frontier epic. As with all of this, it is subject to change, so stay tuned for more information as the month progresses.
