Halloween event overview

Rust’s 2024 Halloween Event is back, and it's packed with all the spooky goodness you know and love. There’s seasonal items, loot drops, creepy events, Frankenstein’s pets, and yep, those wild portals are making a comeback! The event kicks off with a mandatory patch on Thursday, October 24th at 2pm EST and will haunt the servers until the next forced wipe on November 7th.

Edit: The patch has been pushed back due to some unforeseen issues. Halloween will now launch on Monday at 3pm EST (7pm GMT)

Portals

Portals are back again this year, popping up randomly around the map and sticking around for a bit before they collapse. Step through one, and you’ll get teleported to a small dungeon—think mini cave system. Inside, you’ll find loot and some creepy scarecrow NPCs ready to fight. Once you’ve grabbed all the goods and dealt with the baddies, just hop back through the portal to return to where you started.

Here are some examples of we found in dungeons:

  • 5 NPC Scarecrows - 1 Normal Crate and 1 Military Crate

  • 3 NPC Scarecrows - 2 Military Crates

  • 4 NPC Scarecrows - 1 Normal Crate and 1 Military Crate

  • 5 NPC Scarecrows - 3 Normal Crates

  • 2 NPC Scarecrows - 1 Normal Crate and 3 Military Crates

Frankenstein pets

Frankenstein pets also make a comeback for the duration of the event.

Overview
Frankenstein pets are making a return and you can assemble them from 3 parts on the Frankenstein table. You can find these parts by taking down Mummy and Scarecrow NPCs scattered around the map. There are 3 types of Frankenstein pets: light, medium, and heavy. Once you’ve collected any 3 parts, slap ‘em together on the Frankenstein table to bring your pet to life. After that, you can give your new monster buddy some orders and watch it go to work!

Frankenstein table
The Frankenstein table is a default blueprint, so no need to go hunting for it. It’s a must-have for putting your creepy little pet together. It only costs 200 metal frags, so it’s a breeze to craft. Once you’ve made it, just plop it down in your base, toss in the Frankenstein parts you’ve collected, then hold ‘E’ on the table and hit ‘Wake Frankenstein’ to bring your monster to life. Simple as that!

Types of Frankenstein
There are 3 types of Frankenstein pets: light, medium, and heavy, and each comes with its own perks. The light Frankenstein is quick but doesn’t have a ton of health, while the heavy is a tank with more health but moves like a slug. Medium sits somewhere in between.

You’ve got 3 parts for each type, but here’s the fun part: they’re all interchangeable! So, you can mix and match to create your own weird combo—maybe light legs for speed, a medium torso for balance, and a heavy head for durability.

Controlling your pet
A new radial menu has been added for when you hold ‘p’ while looking at a pet (p for pet, get it?). This menu allows you to select what you’d like your pet to do. Here is a summary of each command:

Idle
Pet does nothing

Follow
Pet will follow you around

Guard
Pet will attack anything that attacks you

Assist
Pet will attack anything you attack

Move
Pet will move to where you are looking

Destroy
Pet is instantly killed

Combat
Pet will attack anything you attack, It will attack anything that attacks you, It will defend itself if attacked

Other things of note

  • Frankenstein parts are found on mummies / scarecrows around the map

  • You can only have one pet at a time

  • Pets will only travel a max of 100m

  • The Frankenstein table doesn't require power

  • You can see your pets health on bottom right

  • Pets placement is shown on map

New items!

Expect some new spooky items on the item store. Along with community made skins, it looks like at least two new masks are coming in (Frankenstein and Mummy masks).

Edit: Looks like these will be available in game for free during the event (found in mummy and scarecrow loot)

Carvable pumpkins

Also making a comeback previous years Halloween event, carvable pumpkins available. They are pretty straightforward - simply paint on them like a sign, add some wood, and light them up!

Like last year, they will likely be found on the item store.

Spooky Scarecrows and Mummies

The spooky Scarecrows and Mummies are back to haunt your nightmares! Just like in past Halloweens, these bloodthirsty NPCs are roaming the map, hunting for unsuspecting Newmans. If they spot you, they’ll come charging with a Chainsaw or Sickle, ready to chop you up. So, keep your eyes peeled and stay on your toes—they’ll make quick work of you if you’re not careful!

Trick or Treat event

Similar to the Egg hunt from the Easter event, Trick or Treating is back! About once every other in game day you’ll see a countdown and notice pops up saying “Trick or Treat Starts in: 14 seconds”.

Once the event kicks off, Halloween Candy will start spawning around every player. You’ve got 3 minutes to scoop up as much as you can, so get moving!

Now, what do you do with all that candy? Well, like any proper trick-or-treater, you can just stuff it down your throat till you can't take another bite. But if you're feeling fancy, you can also upgrade it to higher tiers of candy (and loot). Check out the details below for what each tier offers!

Oh, and the top three people to get the most candy, get prizes…

The Scarecrow Wrap - found in Small Loot Bags - will give you extra candy vision when applied (basically allows you to see the candy from farther away).
