So long, Easter

Live in an optional server and client update on Tuesday, Easter has been disabled for the year. See you next year egg hunts and congrats to all the top bunnies!

Nuclear Missile Silo

Over on the AUX2 branch, the Nuclear Missile Silo is now available for the public to test! Still a work in progress, several features are yet to be added. Nevertheless, we’re able to see the layout of this mostly underground structure, and get a peek at the newest NPC model, the NVGM Scientist.

Given the whole WIP thing, features are limited, and everything is subject to change. There’s no loot or radiation at the moment, but you can open the hatch via the button in one of the small buildings above ground. Watch out, it only opens for about 30 seconds before it closes again.

Once you hop in the hatch, you can explore down several levels next to the big missile below the hatch. Along with 10 or so of these new NVGM Scientists, you’ll find living quarters, bathrooms, computer rooms, and more. Then, once you reach the bottom level, you’ll find a room with some warheads, barrels, a truck, and some computer racks. To escape, there is a blue puzzle to exit. Based on commits, it looks like some additional features are on the way, too.

Also interesting but still not clear, this monument will apparently provide some more details on the lore of Rust. There were even developer conversations years ago about some sort of player-triggered wipe event via a nuclear detonation… So who knows what this monument could actually be for!

As always, we’ll keep you posted as more comes to light about this exciting new monument. If you’d like to test it out yourself, simply switch over to the AUX2 branch: Steam library, right click Rust [staging], click properties, betas tab, and select AUX2 from the list, then let the client update run).

No more skin disabling

In more controversial of news, a commit this week has made it so players can no longer disable workshop skins. This means all players will now see whatever cosmetic skins people are wearing. Previously, many players chose to disable this to negate any potential benefits various cosmetic skins may have.

The devs, however, note that skins are a default part of gameplay and it’s important to make sure they aren’t being disabled as to keep the playing field level. Regardless of your point of view on this, you can expect this to go live with the update and forced wipe on May 4th.

Rust+ changes

Some tweaks to how Rust+ works are coming soon. Here is a summary:

  • Reduce the range Rust+ cameras can see players from

  • Only allow Rust+ cameras to see names of players close to the camera

  • Convars to control the above ranges

Building skins

More work this week on the building skins 3 branch. Word on the street is this will be an upcoming DLC which allows you to modify the look of your actual bases. According to commits, there will be some sort of brutalist skin along with a brick and a stone block skin. We’ll keep you posted as more comes to light on this.
