12:00am EST - Update day has arrived, and with it, a new Hardcore game mode, UI changes, storage buffs, fixes, and more!

As with all first Thursdays, this update forces a map wipe and is expected to go live at 2pm EST (7pm BST). Our update stream goes live at 1pm EST. Follow @Rustafied for news throughout the day.

Hardcore game mode

Highlight of the update today, a new game mode goes live! Hardcore is a trimmed down, raw Rust experience. Requiring the entire server to be set into this mode, these changes do not impact normal vanilla gameplay. For those who join a Hardcore server, here is what you’re in for:

No teams
Team system and contacts are disabled

Limited chat
Local chat limited to 100m, no global

No maps
In game map disabled, no compass, and map seeds are hidden

No safe zones
Peacekeepers and sentries are removed

No crawling
Crawling while wounded has been removed

Limited bags
5 max sleeping bags per player

Monthly BP wipes
Maps and BP’s are force wiped each month

Other features

  • No MLRS

  • No missions

  • No Rust+

  • No drone marketplace

  • New in game change log to track future updates

If you’re interested in trying out Hardcore, we’re provisionally launching a Hardcore server in the EU. Found on the community list, Rustafied EU Hardcore is a 250 slot, 4.25k map, weekly map wipe server. If hardcore takes off, we’ll consider opening more in other regions.

Increased storage capacity

A huge shift to item storage comes today as small and large wooden storage capacity has been increased.

Small Wooden Storage

Old
12 slots

New
18 slots

Large Wooden Storage

Old
30 slots

New
48 slots

Furnace UI changes

Smelting and cooking have a new look with this update as the UI has been redone. Impacting furnaces, campfires, BBQ’s, refineries, and the like, these changes offer a more straightforward and easier to learn method of operation.

Instead of a group of ‘all purpose’ slots where items can be arranged in any order, the new UI features labeled rows for fuel, input, and output. Aside from looks, furnaces now burn through input slots as a queue as opposed to in parallel. Also, given the design, there is a limit on fuel (wood).

Thankfully, the actual utility of each item remains untouched -- no nerfs to smelt or cook speed. If anything, it looks like large furnaces might be a bit more efficient after these changes. One note on BBQ’s though: you can no longer store any item in there, it’s now limited to food.

Single pickup notices

Furnaces weren’t the only UI element to shift this month. Players harvesting (especially with jackhammers and chainsaws) will notice the right side of their screen no longer floods with resource notices. This is thanks to the new single pickup notices.

Now, when gathering a like kind resource in succession, the amount gathered will count up in one UI notice instead of creating a new notice for each pickup. This works on all resource types including harvesting animals. Overall, it’s much cleaner and a great QoL update!

Coaling tower improvements

After its addition last month, the Coaling Tower as the Trainyard monument has received some updates. Specifically, there is now an entrance at the top via the sky tunnel which requires a green card to enter (no fuse). Once inside, players can use a new ladder to get down to the controls. Also, as you can imagine, this may be used as an exit too (no card swipe required).

Combatlog improvements

The ‘combatlog’ console command has received some improvements this month. Along with an overall reorganization of the code, the command will now show more information about desync times. Also, the ping field has been removed.

Hapis fixes

Our favorite official static map, Hapis Island, has some fixes going live with the update today. Here is a rundown:

  • The road network mesh has been refactored. This equates to smoother driving - no more falling through places and other collision issues

  • Fixed the terrain violation issues once and for all Site A sewer

  • Fixed lake boundary clipping slightly into Oxum sub terrain

  • Fixed a few terrain holes

  • Added a missing ladder volume

Other stuff

  • Distant gunshot sounds are more muffled and reverberant

  • The nailgun attack is quieter

  • New drone marketplace

  • New softcore reclaim terminal

  • Fixed getting hit by trains sometimes parenting the player instead of damaging them

  • Added death screen icons and names for all the new train components

  • Added death screen names and icons for modular car deaths, and for snowmobile deaths

  • More tweaks to fix trees spawning in the way of ziplines

  • Water flickering when using TSAA has been resolved

  • Added global.consolescale to change the font size in the console window

  • SetHorseBreed now only requires admin (was developer only)

  • Fixed camera snapping after closing inventory under certain conditions on OSX
