Christmas starts next week!

Ho ho ho! It’s almost that time of year again as the Rust Christmas festivities kick off next week. If you’ve never been around for a Rust Xmas before, you’re in for a treat! There will be presents, decorations, Santa’s sleigh, and probably some new exclusive Xmas items.

This event will start off with a mandatory client and server update expected to hit at normal time (2pm EST / 7pm GMT) next Thursday. We’ll have a full write up of the Xmas event in our article next week.

More general quality of life

Jarryd is tearing it up on the general_qol branch, adding a ton of helpful new things to improve the lives of players and admins. Here is a summary of some of the main changes:

  • Show wounded teammates as orange in the Team UI

  • Add a map marker for the patrol helicopter

  • Added a Defender mode to SAM sites, while in this mode SAM sites will not fire at vehicles and will only fire at MLRS rockets

  • Add No Ammo, Low Ammo and Has Target outputs to the SAM site. Low ammo is triggered when less than 10 rockets remain

  • Teammates in close range now update their position on the map in real time

  • First pass on a popup showing what resources are missing when repairing an entity with the hammer

  • Can now left click and hold a tech on the tech tree to unlock it (1s)

  • Dismounting mobile objects now requires a 0.5s hold (cars, helicopter, submarines, etc) Static mountables will still dismount immediately (chairs, sofas, etc)

  • Added support for a sfx to play when an item of clothing is broken

  • Added virtual Admin_Who method to BaseEntity to modify the output of the "ent who" command per entity. Using "ent who" on a sleeping bag now prints out the name and id of the player assigned to it. Using "ent who" on a camper module will print out these details for all of the attached bags

  • Add teleport2autheditem command that teleports the player to a random item authed to the given player (similar to teleport2owneditem). Works with Tool Cupboards, Code Locks and AutoTurrets

Snowmobiles and arctic bases

Work continues on some wintry branches. Both Snowmobiles and arctic bases are on the horizon. Still no visuals or detailed information about how this stuff will roll out as it’s all on separate branches. Don’t hold your breath for this new content though, word on the street is it won’t hit till February at the earliest. As always, we’ll keep you posted as more comes to light.

Hapis conversion

Our old static map friend, Hapis Island, continues its revamp and update. As you may recall, it was removed from the official map rotation after the world revamp went live earlier this year. Since then we’ve seen a number of commits to bring this classic map back into the fray. No word on when it’ll be ready for prime time yet.

In the meantime, if you need your Hapis fix, check out our Zenlab servers where we are currently running an excellent community made version of the map by Nox.

Other stuff

  • More work on AI improvements

  • Initial work on making players’ backpacks float

  • Continued work on a brick building branch

  • Work on head movement when mounted
