A Kayak and more floating in...

12:00am EST - Another week for Rust development and we’re seeing some fixes and exciting new things on the horizon.

Kayak coming

It appears as though the newest form of water travel is not far off as commits continue to flood the canoe branch. Renamed this week from canoe, the Kayak will be accompanied by a paddle to propel yourself through the water. This week, along with baseline parts (art, gibs, health, etc.) the team hooked up the ability to use the left and right paddles with the left and right mouse buttons. 

All of this work is still on a separate branch, so no word exactly how this will look and work. That said, the team appears to be prioritizing this new watercraft, so we might not have to wait long for more details.


Monument boat shop progress

Kayaks isn’t the only new thing coming to the shores of Rust. Next monument in the hopper, the Boat Shop, has seen some progress as well this week. With most of the work happening on textures and art, it’s not clear exactly how this monument will function.

Will this boat shop forever shift how watercraft are acquired? Like Airwolf for boats? That remains to be seen, but we’ll keep you posted as more comes to light.


Missions baseline

Helk dropped an initial commit to a new branch called ‘missions.’ No details on what exactly these will be, but one can imagine from the name that they’ll likely be some organized activities, maybe team based. Does this relate to the ‘RPG-like’ elements Helk alluded to in his recent article with PCGamesN? We’ll let you know more as it comes to light.


Farming optimization

It appears as though a body of work aimed at optimizing the underlying systems of farming could soon be ready to go live. The farming optimization branch, first seen a little over a month ago, looks to focus on improving the efficiency of how the game calculates various things with regards to the farming process. This isn’t only backend stuff it seems as the clone option will be shown by default when mousing over plants while holding RMB.

Edit: This branch was merged into staging - we’ll post more info as we find it if applicable.


Storage monitor

A new item on a fresh branch appears to be in the works this week. The Storage monitor appears to be a new attachment to storage containers (tool cupboards only apparently at the moment). What will this do exactly? No definitive word yet but it seems as though it could provide insight into the status of items in a particular storage crate. Maybe it’ll be a smart device that communicates with the Rust+ app? That’d be cool.


Other stuff

  • Tea now hydrates you when you drink it

  • Fixed some gaps in certain conditional roof instances

  • Fixed fuel storage not being accessible on RHIB after collider update

  • Fixed wounded players blocking server-side projectiles (rockets etc) as if they were standing up. Collider height is now reduced while wounded.

  • Fix a player getting stuck in the recent drivers queue of a car if the queue has multiple drivers in it
