Lazy aim, reduced crafting, improved hit detection, and more on Koth.
2:48pm EST - With one day to go before the big update, we are seeing some significant changes to gameplay. New aiming dynamics, improved hitbox accuracy, reduced crafting time, and maybe even a new level. The update tomorrow will not force a wipe (BP or map), however, server owners may choose to wipe at their discretion. Let’s get into it...
Lazy aim
If you ever played legacy, you’ll recall how subtle movements when holding a gun would result in the barrel of the gun moving, as opposed to your whole screen. This dynamic, known as ‘Lazy aim,’ is making a comeback this week. Still in need of some tweaking, the aim on the current development branch is incredibly too lazy (and still active when aiming down the sight of your gun, which will be disabled prior to the update going live). This feature stands to dramatically shift the feel of gunplay, especially while firing from the hip.
Reduced crafting time
Helk has reduced the crafting time for many low level items. Many objects were dropped from 60 to 30 seconds, and a bunch of items which took 2 minutes have been dropped to 60 seconds. Nice!
Hit detection
Andre has merged his hit detection branch into main. Not only does this body of work improve the overall accuracy of hit boxes, it also includes the first iteration of bullet penetration. This means bullets can now fly through body parts to hit others (e.g. through hand to chest).
Decay changes
Helk shared with me earlier today about his intentions to change the way decay works. Stepping back towards legacy dynamics a bit, he shared how not just foundations should decay. Although no commits have been made towards this yet, we may very well see some significant changes to the decay system in tomorrow's update. More details on this as they come to light.
More on Koth island
I spoke with Petur a bit more about his new level, Koth Island. Although we have no visuals yet, he is crunching to get a version in this weeks patch. Here are some details:
- This will be a PvP based specialty level with many loot spawns around (low and high tier).
- Building will not be permitted anywhere (no word on sleeping bags).
- It is symmetrical, allowing for team play in the future (if they choose to add that in).
- It is a very small island (1k world size).
- People will spawn on the beach up north, working their way down to the sphere monument which will have a ton of good loot (but also be in the snow, forcing people to gear up before getting there).
I’m really excited to try this map out because, not only does it sound like an intense gameplay experience, it’ll provide a space for players to practice PvP without the large risks of normal gameplay. Stay tuned, I plan on putting a server up for this map as soon as a playable version is released.
New sounds
Alex has added some new sounds for building gibs and the beancan grenade. Building gibs (the building parts which break up when you demolish) now sound a lot heavier and less like you just demolished a cardboard foundation. The beancan grenade also sounds a lot deeper, like it has more force behind it.
