Who's ready for a fresh start?!

7/6pm @ 6pm EST - Slow start to the week in Rust development... Not a whole ton going on today. Taking it easy, I'll be back tomorrow with an update post.

7/3 @ 7:30am EST - The update came out about an hour ago. Our servers are wiped and updated. Check out the devblog here.

11:59pm EST - Updated the damage dealt by landmines. New figures show 65hp dealt when wearing urban pants / boots / metal.

7:58pm EST - The update is delayed till tomorrow! http://playrust.com/update-delay/

7:20pm EST - No update yet... still waiting for that shit to go live. Will post more info as soon as I have it.

2:50pm EST - The update stream is live! Come see what's new this week, get answers to your questions and know exactly when the update goes live!

2:20pm EST - Working with Helk to test the new in-game anti-cheat system. Hopefully it'll prevent no-clippers from doing their thing... awesome!

12:00pm EST - It’s update time! Despite Garry being on vacation this week, we’ve still got a good one in store. Along with the next iteration of procedural map generation, we’ve also got 3 new items and various other tweaks and fixes. Given the new map generation, this update will force a map wipe on all servers (no BP wipe will be forced).

Our update stream will go live at 3pm EST today to show off what’s new and answer any questions from the audience. As usual, the update is expected to hit sometime between 4 and 6pm EST. Follow @Rustafied for updates throughout the day. Now, let’s get into it...

Update summary video

Check out this update overview video from the Rustafied media team.

Land mine

A new trap has been added and, oh boy is it deadly! Land mines can be placed just like snap traps and feature a devastating explosion when walked on. These are a non-default blueprint (meaning you’ll have to find one or research it before you can craft), one time use, and can be placed on the ground or on building blocks (when building is privileged). Although they do damage building blocks, they are not a valid raiding tool. Here’s some more details and pictures:

Cost
125 gun powder
75 metal frags

Crafting time
30 seconds

Damage dealt
~100 w/o armor
65hp dealt with armor

Bone club

A new tool for bludgeoning Newmans noggins has arrived, the bone club finally gives us something to do with our bone fragments other than craft a bone knife. This bloody bone is a default blueprint and doesn’t cost much of anything. As usual, you get what you pay for, meaning this club doesn’t deal a whole ton of damage. That said, between this and a rock, my bets are on the bone. Here’s some details and pictures:

Cost
20 bone fragments

Crafting time
30 seconds

Damage dealt
10 - 20 per hit

Riot helmet

Complementing our new melee weapon, the riot helmet has been added to provide protection. Don’t expect this thing to stop bullets like a facemask or bucket helmet, this new headgear is specifically aimed at reducing melee damage taken. Like the other helmets, it is not a default blueprint (although it should be pretty common). Here’s some details and pictures:

Cost
30 cloth
50 metal fragments

Crafting time
60 seconds

Protection
Reduces melee attacks by about half

Procgen9

The Rust landscape has once again shifted. Procgen9 introduces some new topology (especially in the desert), less stark transitions between biomes, and longer rivers with varying widths. See more about this in my post yesterday.

In game anti-cheat

To combat the recent influx of hackers, Helk has implemented a first iteration of ingame cheat detection. At the moment this is still a work in progress, however, if all goes to plan, it should be kicking no-clippers before they get a chance to deal too much damage.

Ore changes

Helk has made some significant changes to ore nodes. The yield for each node has been halved, however, the number of nodes throughout the map has increased. As with many changes in the game, the impetus here is to find balance.

Torch changes

The torch just got a bit deadlier. Helk has increased the damage it does when you whack someone with a lit torch. He’s also made it so a lit torch lasts a couple hits longer. All in all, this change makes it much more viable than the rock when it comes to killing nakeds.

Waterpipe is now a default blueprint

The Eoka is no longer the only default gun blueprint in Rust, Newmans can now craft a waterpipe shotgun from the get-go. Coming a week after the 12 gauge and handmade shells we buffed, this gives even more reason not to trust nakeds. Remember, this gun can fire handmade shells, 12 gauge buckshots and 12 gauge slugs. That said, I highly recommend the buckshot for the best bang for your buck. Here’s some more details:

Cost
300 wood
100 metal fragments

Crafting time
2 minutes

Recommended ammo
12 gauge buckshot

Other stuff

  • Ragdolls are no longer going crazy when shot with arrows / spears
  • Shotgun slug is more accurate
  • Cost of coffee can helmet has been reduced
