Weather progress, bolt sight fixes, stealth returns and more!
4:14pm EST - Garry’s name of the game this week is polishing features, and boy, is he doing just that! We’re seeing a bunch of small (but much needed) fixes over the past 24 hours and I couldn’t be happier. Before we get into all of those, let’s take a moment to discuss the progress on weather...
Weather progress
Andre is still cranking along on the weather branch. Looking at the several commits today, we can see he has added particle effects for both snow and rain, along with adding a rain drop overlay when looking up while it’s raining. I chatted with him briefly just now and, although he’s not 100% sure, what he’s implemented so far is working well so chances are we’ll see weather make it’s entrance this week. More on this as the weather branch merges into main.
Bolt action sights fixed
Topping the charts for most exciting fix from Garry this week, the sights for the bolt action have been fixed! For far too long, the bolt action sight has been off center and too high up. This has been resolved now that Garry pulled the view model back a bit and centered it. Here’s a visual of the old sight versus the fixed one (with an added red dot on the true screen center):
The return of stealth
Coming in at a close second for awesome fixes, Garry has polished some of the footstep noises. Not only did he remove those annoying phantom footsteps which would play after you already stopped moving, he made it so crouched players once again move silently.
Timed explosive changes
Some changes to the timed explosive charges have been made. Damage to other walls has been eliminated, making it so damage is only dealt to the block C4 was placed on (along with damage to any players / ai in the blast radius. He’s also fixed C4 not attaching properly sometimes.
Campfire / furnace UI improvements
Up till this point, filling a campfire or furnace and turning it on has been kind of a pain in the ass. You had to go to the inventory view to fill it, exit out, then hold ‘E’ again to select the option to turn it on. Garry has made this much more usable by just adding the on/off buttons to the inventory screen like so:
Howling like a wolf
In the first progress we’ve seen on gestures in a while, Minh has added the 3rd person animations for howling like a wolf. Now, as opposed to just knocking on the door, we’ll have naked men with wolf headdresses howling outside our doors. Personally, I can’t think of a more apt addition to Rust.
Other things
That’s not all, there have also been more miscellaneous fixes and changes. Here’s some highlights:
- All sounds are controllable by the audio sliders
- Items dropped in to wood boxes no longer disappear
- You can drag and drop out of water catchers
- Can’t select water or fuel from their containers
- Burning wood creates less charcoal
