Unity 5.1, quarry progress, Hapis and status.

3:36pm EST - Not the most exciting start to rust development this week. Although some cool things are coming down the pike, focus is currently on fixing bugs caused by updating to the newest version of Unity...

Unity 5.1

Several days ago, the release candidate for Unity 5.1 came out and, over the weekend, Garry started the upgrade. I had a brief exchange with him to see how it was going. Here’s the long and short:

  • Don’t expect it to bring any huge benefits
  • Some graphical stuff has been recoded, so things might be slightly faster
  • Right now, however, the bugs vastly outweigh the benefits

And that is mostly what we’re seeing in the commits: Fixes to random shit. Ideally these things get worked through quickly so Garry can get back to new items and functionality.

Quarry

A new way to gather ore is on the horizon. The quarry, making its first appearance in last weeks devblog, is getting closer to being implemented as Vince has committed the first models and animations. Although it is unknown exactly how this will work or what it’ll cost, one thing is clear, it looks pretty darn cool. The functionality still needs to be coded, however, so it very well might be another week or two till we actually see this in game.

Hapis improvements

Petur continues work on improving Hapis island. Although it was unsucked significantly last week, this custom map still has some work to be done. Improving some snow rocks and optimizing trees, Petur also plans on doing more biome specific changes as the week progresses.

Status for players

Previously accessible only to admins, the status command has been added for all players. Typing ‘status’ in console (F1) now outputs a list of connected players with their name, steamid, ping, and time connected.
