Update summary, new icons, exploit fixes and more!
3/6 @ 2:30pm EST - Not a ton going on in Rust development today, the game is running smooth and no emergency patches needed. Have a great weekend playing!
4:20pm EST - Update just hit! Our server is updated, new map coming soon (waiting on the map mod to update).
4:08pm EST - Devblog 50 just dropped, the update should hit shortly...
3:26pm EST - Last minute fix for locks on armored doors just pushed... This update should hit any time now...
12:10pm EST - It’s Thursday again, meaning that big update is just hours away. The team is still cranking out commits, doing a bunch of little fixes prior to going live. Several big exploits have been patched, including gamma boosting and 3rd person view while sleeping. Remember, this update will cause a map wipe game-wide (although will not force a blueprint wipe). Before we get into what’s new today, let’s look at what changes are coming in this update...
Update summary
- New armored tier, including door
- New landscape (rivers, bridges)
- Improved tier 1 texture (logs)
- Underwater sounds
- Screen overlays toned down
- New building health
- Rad pills work
- Gamma boost no longer works
- Admin no-clip
- New icons
- No more 3rd person when sleeping
- In-eye view mode
- Window bar upgrades
New icons
Some new icons are in play. Edging away from the realistic renders, these new icons are more illustrated. Although most items can be distinguished by just looking at them, you may need to do a couple double takes while you get accustomed to this new look. Many icons haven’t changed, however, I’d expect to see them switch over in the next couple weeks.
Building health
The health of building parts has shifted drastically. Here’s a summary of the new health for each tier:
Tier 0 (Twig)
Old health
50
New health
10
Tier 1 (Wood)
Old health
1000
New health
100
Tier 2 (Stone)
Old health
5000
New health
500
Tier 3 (Sheet Metal)
Old health
8000
New health
200*
Tier 4 (Armor)
Old health
N/A
New health
1000
As usual, all this is very temporary. I had a brief back and forth with Garry and he shared this with me: Helk wants to do a pass on building tier health where they'll all have the same health and the only things that will change are the protection.
The biggest imbalance at the moment is that C4 is still doing the same damage as before. That means one C4 is absolutely devastating to multiple building parts (even armored). If we don’t see a commit to the tune of, “Toned down C4 damage” prior to today's update, the state of raiding will be pretty fucked.
Update: Garry to the rescue, C4 damage has been scaled down. C4 now does 1000 damage.
Update 2: Scratch that, C4 now does 700 damage. So every tier except armored can be taken down with one C4 (armored takes two).
* No, this is not a misprint, stone currently has more HP than sheet metal. Remember though, this doesn't account for the different levels of protection from melee weapons (metal is generally stronger than stone in that respect).
Armored tier balance
There have been some last minute tweaks to the cost of the new Armor tier. It now requires stone, wood and metal (100 of each per wall). Note: you are still able to upgrade straight from the twig tier and you still cannot downgrade anything.
New door
The door for the armored tier (which wasn’t in earlier this week) has been added. This door not only looks badass, it has some great potential for the future (I’m looking at you, viewing window).
Eye-mode
Garry has added eye-mode today. What is that you ask? It’s basically like a little camera in the players head. Isn’t that just first person? No, eye mode is a slightly different, more bouncy perspective. The big benefit (besides fixing the sleeping exploit described below) is that admins will now have the ability to spectate people in first person. This should help admins detect hacks more easily, which is always a plus.
No more 3rd person sleep
Ever since 3rd person was removed from normal gameplay, people have been going to sleep near bases to scout them out. Because sleeping would put you into 3rd person mode, people were using that to visually clip through walls. Thankfully, Garry has removed 3rd person from sleep mode and replaced it with eye-mode. Now, if anything, you just have a nice view of your dick when you’re sleeping.
Gamma boosting no more
No more night vision by boosting your gamma via your video card settings. Garry has implemented a change where, regardless of how bright you set your screen, the graphical information just doesn’t come through in the dark. This system definitely still needs some tweaking as certain textures are appearing very dark (especially in the hours near sunrise and sunset).
Admin noclip
The admin speed running (SHIFT-L) has been switched to a flying noclip mode. The result is admins can travel fast in any direction, pass through any object, and basically stay floating in the air. It's ostensibly the freecam mode but without all the shittiness (things not rendering, slow as balls, etc). The only downside is the lack of god mode or invisibility, basically making any admin using it a big target for the whole server to pop shots at.
Stone pickaxe
Daniel is doing some more work on the stone pickaxe. Although it won't be in today's update, it is coming along nicely:
