Duping fixed, stacks limited to 1000
3:05pm EST - Yesterday, the big UI Reboot went live. Overall the new UI is a huge improvement. As with any new functionality, bugs and exploits will exist. One biggie noticed last night is a new breed of duping exploit. Allowing people to infinitely duplicate stacks of anything, this glitch has huge buildings popping up and entity counts through the roof. Our main server hit over 100,000 entities before the 20 hour mark. Thankfully, Garry is here with a fix...
Duping fixed
The latest update just fixed duping. Unfortunately, the damage has been done. I’ve gotten several reports of people walking around with 100’s of millions of wood. Performance has gone to shit and it’s not going to get better. Given this, I’m wiping when I run the update in a couple minutes. I’ll keep the same seed and performance should hold up for longer without the duping.
Stack limit
Along fix releasing a fix for the duping, Garry has implemented a max stack size of 1,000. This is a pretty big game changer, especially given the player inventory in the new UI is already 8 slots less than before. The first iteration of this hit in an update several hours ago. Unfortunately, it was a little bugged and didn’t allow more than 1,000 of anything in the inventory (not just per stack). Another update just hit which has resolved this issue, allowing for multiple stacks of 1,000.
Already, many people are up in arms about 1,000 being way too small for the stack limit. Remember, this is the way it was planned to be. Being able to stack unlimited amounts was a bug. That said, I agree the limit may be too small given the current building costs.
Performance
Unfortunately, performance hasn’t gotten much better for clients or servers over the past week. Although we still run smooth directly after a wipe, FPS starts dipping as time and entities go up. Thankfully, it appears this is only a major issue for servers with populations of 150 or more. Here’s a comparison of our dev server (averaging 100 players) verse our main server (averaging 200 players). Note, we are only using about a third of the resources on our server box, so this is not an issue with lack of cpu or memory.
Garry has some fixes in mind, so hopefully we’ll be seeing some improvements over the next week.
Factions
The best times I have in this game are when I’m in a group. Human interaction is one of the things which makes this game great. Unfortunately, not everyone has a group to play with. In the interest of helping lone wolves join a pack, we created the factions category on Rustaforum.com. This is a place for people to join up with a faction or recruit new members for their existing group. If you’re looking for people to team with, this is a great place to start.
